EL MORRO

Named in honor of King Phillip II, El Morro is a 16th-century fortress.  Rising 140 feet above the sea, it's 18- foot thick walls provided the greatest defense to the city. Filled with dungeons, tunnels, outposts, ramps, and barracks, it is adorned with “garitas”, the circular boxes that once served as watchtowers.

On February 1949 El Morro was designated a National Historic Site, with the distinction of being the largest fortification in the Caribbean. It was restored in 1992, in honor of the 500th anniversary of the discovery of Puerto Rico by Christopher Columbus, and it is administered by the National Park Service.

You don’t want to miss running alongside this historic jewel, in time to capture a glimpse of the fantastic ocean views it has to offer!
